Academics

At St. John the Baptist, we set high standards for our students. They consistently perform well on standardized tests and go on to attend the best high schools in the Westchester County and New York City area. We attribute our success to our strong instruction, which includes small class sizes, and tailored instruction, as well as our partnership with our parents. This is also supported by a strong foundation of faith that motivates our faculty to teach with dedication and inspires our community to realize its full potential. Our students flourish in an environment of love and acceptance, while being encouraged to grow intellectually, and spiritually.

 

Daily course work includes religion, mathematics, language arts, literature, spelling, vocabulary, science, and social studies. Phonics, penmanship, and typing are taught in the younger grades. Weekly classes include art, music, physical education, theater arts (grades 4-5).

 

Our robust and growing extracurricular program keeps students engaged in the life of the school.

State Alignment: The academic program at St. John the Baptist aligns with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards for core subjects like English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. 

Catholic Identity: St. John the Baptist instruction follows the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS).

Faith Integration: Faith and learning are integrated across all subjects, creating meaningful, engaging experiences that promote critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.

Mathematics: Builds conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving skills.  In middle school students have the option to take Algebra 1.

Science: Emphasizes inquiry, observation, and data analysis through hands-on learning.  In middle school students have the option to take a NYS Regents Level Biology class.

Social Studies: Covers U.S. and New York history, ancient civilizations, geography, economics, and civics.

Specialized Subjects: Includes art, music (with a focus on sacred music), physical education, and Spanish.
